Narrowband Nomad is an educational comparison of download times, presented by kooheji.dev.

Last updated: 27 October 2026. These terms describe use of the public Dial-Up Download Calculator at dialup.kooheji.dev.

Purpose & calculation assumptions

Estimates multiply the selected file size by eight and divide by the nominal connection rate. KB, MB, GB and TB in the interface are decimal units: 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes. Displayed whole-second estimates round up. A displayed year means 365 days and a month means 30 days; these are duration conventions, not calendar dates.

Real transfers vary with protocol overhead, negotiated rate, line quality, congestion, retries and server performance. The app is not a speed test or a promise of service. Smoke signals and Morse use illustrative bit-rate equivalents; they do not transfer binary files at a fixed measured rate. Telex baud is modelled for comparison. Later broadband and mobile rates are representative examples.

Example files & simulated downloads

Common file sizes, including the AI model example, are illustrative and vary by encoding, compression, model and edition. No software, music, video, game or model weights are supplied. Live Download simulates progress at the selected rate. Playback acceleration changes simulated time, not your internet connection. No actual file is downloaded or written to disk.

Privacy

The Privacy Policy explains local processing, hosting logs and your choices. Reading or using this site does not constitute consent to optional tracking.

Intellectual property & third-party assets

Project-specific code, copy, custom pixel illustrations and the Narrowband Nomad identity are presented by kooheji.dev. Third-party styles, fonts and historical icons are separately identified on the Licenses & Credits page and remain subject to their owners' terms. No general open-source licence for the entire project is granted by these terms.

The Win98 icon files are historical Microsoft assets obtained through Alex Meub's collection. Attribution does not grant redistribution permission. The collection is not represented as MIT-licensed or as original project artwork. Narrowband Nomad is an independent project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft, Netscape, technology providers or publishers mentioned in examples.

kooheji.dev, Ko-fi, source references and other linked sites operate independently. Their terms and privacy practices apply when you visit them. No payment is processed by this application.

Acceptable use

Use the app lawfully. Do not interfere with the host, attempt unauthorised access, introduce malicious code or misuse the site to harm other users or systems.

Availability & limitations

The app is provided as available for education and entertainment. Examples and historical summaries may be incomplete and the site may change or be unavailable. To the extent permitted by applicable law, no warranty is made that it is suitable for a particular decision. Nothing here excludes rights or liabilities that cannot lawfully be excluded.
